After a turbulent period both institutionally and on the pitch, especially from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, the fans and the team were reunited in the 2003/04 season, which had begun with considerable uncertainty due to the sale of Mareo's latest gem, David Villa, to Real Zaragoza.
However, against all odds, the team came close to promotion, leading the standings for much of the season and even winning the winter championship.
Promotion to La Liga was finally achieved in the 2007/08 season under the guidance of manager Manolo Preciado. After a spectacular start, remaining undefeated in the first nine matches, Sporting finished the year in third place after defeating SD Eibar 2-0 in the final game on June 15, 2008, at El Molinón.
