The Mexican national team has participated in seventeen editions of the World Cup, obtaining its best results in 1970 and 1986, where it reached the quarter-finals and finished in 6th place in both tournaments. Its greatest achievement at the international level was the Confederations Cup in 1999, a tournament that it hosted, and which makes it the only senior team, outside of CONMEBOL or UEFA, to win a tournament organized directly by FIFA. The team is identified with the colors green of the national flag, white and red, from which the name "la Tricolor" originates.
