The Greatest All-Time European Championship XI

El mejor once de la historia de la Eurocopa

The European Championship, since its first edition in 1960, has been the stage where Europe's finest national sides have gone head to head. Over the decades, the tournament has seen players emerge who have left an indelible mark on football history.

In goal, the choice is Lev Yashin — the Black Spider. Considered by many the greatest goalkeeper of all time, Yashin was the guardian of the Soviet Union in the very first European Championship. His ability to stop shots and his commanding presence between the posts make him the perfect candidate.

In defence, we begin with Sergio Ramos. The Spanish centre-back has been a cornerstone of the national side, with whom he won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012. His leadership, his penchant for scoring decisive goals and his remarkable club success — multiple titles with Real Madrid — secure his place.

Alongside Ramos, Franz Beckenbauer. The Kaiser is considered one of the greatest defenders in history. Beckenbauer, who won the European Championship in 1972 with West Germany, was a sweeper who combined defensive excellence with an impressive ability to initiate play from deep.

Completing the back line is Ronald Koeman — a key figure in the Netherlands' victory at Euro 1988. Known for his thunderous shot and his ability to score from distance, Koeman was a defender with a touch of magic about him.

In midfield, creativity and ingenuity are personified by Antonín Panenka. Perhaps not the most recognised for his overall abilities, his famous Panenka penalty — which gave Czechoslovakia the title in 1976 — has immortalised him in football history. His inclusion is a tribute to audacity and imagination.

Zinedine Zidane is another indispensable presence in the engine room. Winner of Euro 2000, Zidane is considered one of the greatest players of all time. His vision, his elegance and his ability to decide matches in an instant make him a vital member of this team.

Alongside him, Michel Platini — France's hero of 1984. Platini didn't just run the game from midfield; he was also a prolific scorer. His performance at Euro 1984, in which he scored nine goals, remains the stuff of legend.

The midfield is completed by Xavi Hernández, the engine of Spain's championship-winning sides of 2008 and 2012. With his passing precision and tactical intelligence, Xavi was the brain behind a style of play that dominated world football for years. And by his side, the inseparable Andrés Iniesta. Iniesta, with his sublime technique and his gift for appearing at the most critical moments, formed with Xavi an unstoppable partnership that took Spain to the summit of the game.

Up front, the choice is clear: Gerd Müller, the Torpedo. Müller, who guided Germany to victory in 1972, is one of the most prolific strikers in football history. His ability to find the net from any position makes him an essential part of this team.

Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be left out. Although he missed the Euro 2016 final, his extraordinary impact on the tournament and his remarkable goalscoring record for Portugal and at club level ensure his place in this all-time XI.

This all-time European Championship team does not only celebrate the finest players to have lifted the trophy — it also pays tribute to the deeds and unforgettable moments that have shaped the tournament's history.
