The Greatest All-Time Copa América XI

The best players in Copa América history

The Copa América, the oldest international football tournament in the world, has been a stage for greatness across its 108-year history. Today we present the all-time XI for this prestigious competition — a selection that reflects the very best South American football has to offer.

In goal, Paraguay's José Luis Chilavert gets the nod. Famous not only for his goalkeeping abilities but also for being the first goalkeeper to score a free-kick in international football, his impact on the tournament is beyond question.

The defence is built around two legendary Brazilian full-backs: Cafú and Roberto Carlos. Both players were vital in Brazil's victories in 1997 and 1999, distinguished by their pace, stamina and ability to contribute in attack. In the centre, Argentina's Oscar Ruggeri and Chile's Elías Figueroa complete a formidable defensive line. Ruggeri, a defensive wall and natural leader, alongside Figueroa, considered one of the greatest defenders in South American history.

The midfield features iconic figures who have left an indelible mark on the tournament. Uruguay's Enzo Francescoli, with outstanding performances across five Copa América editions and three winners' medals, is an obvious inclusion. Alongside him, Brazil's Dunga — known for his leadership and ability to win the ball — and Chile's Arturo Vidal, fundamental to Chile's victories in 2015 and 2016, form a balanced and talented trio.

In attack, the three chosen combine skill, goals and an imposing presence: Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Gabriel Batistuta. Although Diego Maradona is an undisputed legend, we have opted for Messi on the basis that he lifted the Copa América in 2021 — the most important trophy Maradona never won with Argentina. That victory marks a crucial distinction, as Maradona retired without having won this prestigious tournament. Ronaldo "El Fenómeno" was decisive in Brazil's wins in 1997 and 1999. Batistuta, with two titles (1991 and 1993), consolidates his place as one of the most lethal strikers the competition has ever seen.

Messi, for his part, has not only won the Copa América but has been the cornerstone of the Argentine side for over a decade, cementing his place in this all-time XI.

This all-time lineup reflects the richness and greatness of South American football, celebrating those players who have left an unforgettable mark on the Copa América through their skill, their passion and their dedication to the game.
