Los Mejores Jugadores de la Historia de la Copa América

THE BEST 11 IN HISTORIC CUP AMERICA

The Copa América, the oldest international tournament in the world, has witnessed the greatness of many footballers throughout its 108-year history. Today we present the historic lineup of this prestigious championship, a team that reflects the best of South American football.

In goal, Paraguayan José Luis Chilavert takes the spot. Known not only for his skills as a goalkeeper, but also for being the first goalkeeper to score a goal from a free kick, his impact on the tournament is indisputable.

The defence is made up of two legendary Brazilian full-backs: Cafu and Roberto Carlos. Both players were vital in Brazil's victories in the 1997 and 1999 editions, standing out for their speed, stamina and ability to join the attack. As centre-backs, we have chosen Oscar Ruggeri from Argentina and Elias Figueroa from Chile. Ruggeri, a defensive wall and natural leader, and Figueroa, considered one of the best defenders of all time in South America, complete a formidable backline.

The midfield includes iconic figures who have left an indelible mark on the tournament. Uruguayan Enzo Francescoli, with outstanding appearances in five Copa America editions and three trophies to his name, is a clear choice. Alongside him, Brazil's Dunga, known for his leadership and ball-winning ability, and Chile's Arturo Vidal, instrumental in Chile's victories in 2015 and 2016, form a balanced and talented midfield trio.

In attack, we have selected a trio that combines skill, goals and an imposing presence on the pitch: Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Gabriel Batistuta. Although Diego Maradona is an undisputed legend, we have opted for Messi due to his success in lifting the Copa América in 2021, the most important trophy that Maradona was unable to achieve with the Argentine national team. This victory marks a crucial difference, as Maradona retired without having won this prestigious tournament. Ronaldo, known as "El Fenómeno", was decisive in Brazil's victories in 1997 and 1999. Batistuta, with two titles under his belt (1991 and 1993), establishes himself as one of the most lethal forwards in the tournament.

Messi, for his part, has not only won the Copa America, but has also been a fundamental pillar in the Argentine team for more than a decade, consolidating his place in this historic lineup.

This historic line-up reflects the richness and grandeur of South American football, highlighting those players who have left an indelible mark on the Copa America. Each of them has contributed to the legend of this tournament with their skills, their passion and their dedication to the beautiful game.
