It was the sly response, the brazen evasion of the one who had sent the ball flying but played dumb, looked the other way, and hoped someone else would be the fool to go and get it.

It only worked if you had quick reflexes and were good at lying. "I didn't touch it," you'd say with a poker face while everyone knew it was you. Epic arguments and absurd negotiations would ensue, until someone, usually the most honorable or the newest member of the group, would give in and go down grumbling. The Law of the Cup was betrayal, cunning, and survival. Pure street football.
