THE STORY BEHIND ...

Athletic Bilbao was founded in Bilbao in 1898, influenced by British sailors who played "foot-ball" on the docks of the estuary. Young men from Biscay embraced it. It was officially founded in 1901. By 1903, it was already winning Cups.

It was one of the founding members of La Liga in 1929. It has never been relegated. In the 1930s, it dominated Spanish football with players like Iraragorri, Gorostiza, and Bata. In the 1940s, Telmo Zarra became the club's and the national team's all-time leading scorer. In the 1950s, the team of "eleven villagers" won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey. In the 1960s and 70s, Iribar, Rojo, Dani, and company kept the team competitive.

In the 1980s, with Clemente as manager, Athletic won two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa. San Mamés was a real stadium. In the 90s and 2000s, the club continued to compete with its youth academy, character, and passionate fans. In 2012 and 2015, it reached European finals. In 2021, it won the Super Cup. In 2024, it lifted the Copa del Rey in Seville.

Since the 2000s, Athletic has remained true to its philosophy: competing with its own players, developing homegrown talent, and maintaining respect. The rest is history.

Iconic Moments

1898 – Founding and English Roots
The Lions were born in Bilbao, inspired by British football. Their creation fueled local passion and marked the beginning of a unique tradition: competing with players born or trained in the Basque Country, consolidating a distinct cultural and sporting identity.

1914 – Cup Trilogy
With Pichichi leading the attack, the Lions won three consecutive Cups (1914, 1916). These triumphs established the club's reputation as a national powerhouse and strengthened the bond between the youth academy, the fans, and the city, cementing the mystique of Basque football.

1983 – Historic Double
Under the management of Javier Clemente, the Bilbao squad won the league and the Copa del Rey in consecutive seasons, defeating Real Madrid and Barcelona. The victory was celebrated with an iconic barge parade along the Bilbao estuary and remains etched in the collective memory of the fans as one of the club's most glorious moments.

2024 – Contemporary Cup Reign
The Lions lifted their twenty-fourth Copa del Rey, cementing their position as the second most successful club in the competition in Spain. This triumph reinforced the red-and-white identity and the youth academy philosophy, demonstrating that tradition and local commitment remain competitive in modern football.
