La selección escocesa, aprovechando el partido que iban a jugar contra Inglaterra, cambió su escudo por el "Cardo contra la Rosa". Y la camiseta lució los colores del Conde de Rosebery.
El 30 de noviembre de 1872 se celebró en Escocia (Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow) el primer partido internacional de la historia: Escocia 0-0 Inglaterra. Los anfitriones vestían con su tradicional camiseta azul marino. Sin embargo, en 1881, la selección escocesa adoptó por primera vez una camiseta con los colores rosa y amarillo del Conde de Rosebery, un famoso político y aristócrata escocés, fundador de la Federación Escocesa de Fútbol, que se diferenciaba en las carreras de caballos porque su equipo vestía esos colores actualmente conocidos como “primrose”.
