West Ham United were founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. In 1900, the name was changed to West Ham, and in 1919 the team was selected to play in the Football League Second Division, achieving promotion to the First Division around 1923.
In the 1960s, the English press dubbed the club "The Academy of Football" due to the number of talented young players who came through its youth academy. In 1964, they won their first title: the FA Cup, and a year later they won their first continental trophy: the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Although they have never won the Premier League title, their youth academy has produced many great current British players such as Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, and Jermain Defoe. Steve Harris, bassist and frontman of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, also played for the club.
