History of football in Valencia: tradition, passion and legacy.

Valencia has a football tradition that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, with its origins in 1902 thanks to the military officer José León, who formed the Club Español. The entity that became established in the capital was the Valencia Foot-ball Club, founded in 1919 at the Bar Torino. At the same time, the Levante Foot-ball Club (created in 1908) became established in the coastal neighborhoods. Both clubs underwent a forced merger in 1939 (after the Spanish Civil War) between Levante F.C. and Gimnástico F.C., resulting in Unión Deportiva Levante-Gimnástico (later Levante U.D.). Over the decades, the Valencian clubs consolidated their positions. Valencia CF settled at the Mestalla Stadium (inaugurated in 1923), which witnessed their first league titles in the 1940s. Levante UD (the "Yoke-Boost Team") played at the Camp de La Creu and the old Vallejo Stadium until the inauguration of the Ciutat de València Stadium (formerly the Antonio Román Stadium) in 1969.
