Tarragona has a sporting tradition dating back to the late 19th century, with the founding of the Club Gimnasio on March 1, 1886, which initially focused on Swedish gymnastics. The club was officially established as Club Gimnàstic de Tarragona in 1893. The football section was created later, in 1914, when it absorbed Olímpico F.C., by which time the club was already the most prominent in the city, with a vibrant multi-sport program.
Over the decades, the maroon-clad club adopted the name Club Gimnàstic de Tarragona. For years, matches were held at the Camp de l’Avinguda de Catalunya, until the inauguration of the Nou Estadi (or José Luis Calderón Stadium) in 1972, which became the epicenter of the city's football life. Nàstic experienced its greatest glories with its three seasons in the First Division (the first in 1947) and the historic promotion of 2006, culminating in "Nasticmania."
