Palencia has a football tradition that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, with its origins in the Christian schools and the Los Exploradores de Palencia association in 1914. The big step was taken in 1922 with the founding of Sporting La Salle. After several merger attempts, the club that finally consolidated was Club Deportivo Palencia (C.D. Palencia) in 1929, which went through various names before becoming Palencia Club de Fútbol (Palencia C.F.) in 1960.
Over the decades, the purple-clad club adopted the name Palencia C.F.. Matches were held in emblematic venues such as the Campo del Picadero and the Campo de Grijota, before the inauguration of the Estadio de La Balastera in 1943.
