Lleida has a football tradition that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Following the Civil War, several sports clubs from Lleida, such as Lleida Sport Club and Associació Esportiva Lleida Calaveres, joined together to found Lérida Balompié in the spring of 1939. The club acquired its traditional structure in 1947 by merging with Club Deportivo Leridano, giving rise to Unión Deportiva Lérida (U.D. Lérida).
Over the decades, the Lleida club adopted different names, consolidating as Unió Esportiva Lleida in 1978. Matches were held at the Camp d'Esports, a stadium with a history dating back to 1919, which became the epicenter of the city's football life. Lleida experienced two glorious periods with its promotions to the First Division (in 1950/51 and 1993/94), a time when it managed to defeat both FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou and Real Madrid.
