Huelva has a football tradition dating back to the late 19th century, being the first club in Spain with uninterrupted existence. Football was brought by Anglo-Saxon immigrants, and the club was founded on December 18, 1889 as Huelva Recreation Club by Charles Adams and Dr. Alexander Mackay, becoming the "Dean of Spanish Football". Initially, the club organized football and cricket matches on the grounds of the Gas Factory against sailors and teams such as the Rio Tinto English Club.
Over the decades, the club became established as Real Club Recreativo de Huelva. In 1892, the club inaugurated the Velodrome Stadium, its first official ground, which was replaced in the 1950s by the Colombino Stadium. The Dean (Recreativo de Huelva) would experience its "golden years" with promotions to the First Division, the first in 1978 and the most successful, which took them to the 2003 Copa del Rey final. In 2001, the current Nuevo Colombino Stadium was inaugurated. The stadiums, uniforms, and colors of the local clubs have shaped the aesthetic of classic football in the city.
