Today we lost the legendary player who formed part of Real Madrid's Magic Quintet alongside Rial, Di Stéfano, Puskas and Gento. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest French players of all time.
After spells at SCO Angers, where he spent two years, and Stade de Reims, where he played five seasons until 1956, he arrived at Real Madrid — the club where he would become the iconic figure we mourn today.
In 1956, when Real Madrid won the first European Cup in the final against Stade de Reims — his own former club — they decided to sign him, and it proved an inspired decision. They went on to win three more consecutive European Cups, and in 1958 he claimed the Ballon d'Or.
In 1959, he returned to Stade de Reims, where he continued to add to his trophy cabinet before retiring in 1966.
Au revoir, France.
