"It's All Right — Let's Remember Arconada"

Arconada

"It's all right, we've got Arconada"

Do you remember that chant, that rallying cry that rang out in every corner where football was played during the 1980s? For many of us, Arconada was more than just a goalkeeper — he was our hero, our idol, our inspiration.

In those childhood days, going in goal tended to be the fate of the least athletic, the ones with glasses or simply whoever was picked last. But with Arconada, all that changed. Suddenly, the goal became a place of prestige — somewhere everyone wanted to be. His ability between the posts, his agility and his courage left us open-mouthed, inspiring us to want to be like him, to dive the same way for the ball, to leap just as high.

Arconada wasn't just a local hero in San Sebastián — his influence spread the length and breadth of the country. His legacy transcended borders; he was adored by children and adults alike, by supporters of every club. In an era before social media, Arconada was simply a figure of admiration.

Three consecutive Zamora Trophies, two leagues and a Copa with Real Sociedad, a European Cup semi-final and one step away from the final, named the best goalkeeper at Euro '80 and Euro '84. All the theories about the white socks were nonsense — he wore them out of superstition, both at the club and for the national side, just as he refused to change his shirt until his team lost a game. No easy task for that Real Sociedad side of the 1980s.

Despite his mistake in the Euro '84 final, he will always be remembered as one of Spain's first truly great goalkeepers. His shirt was one of the most coveted gifts any kid could receive, and hearing people talk about him today still gives you goosebumps.
