Real Sporting de Gijón is a historic club in Spanish football, and countless figures have passed through its doors to become icons across several generations. In this top ten of the greatest players in Real Sporting de Gijón's history, we revisit some of the names who have left their mark at El Molinón and whose memory is etched forever into the hearts of La Mareona. This ranking has been compiled primarily on the basis of each player's significance, skill, quality and length of service in the red and white.
10. David Villa
Opening this list is "El Guaje" Villa — arguably the greatest talent produced by the Sporting academy. Villa, born in Tuilla, made his first-team debut in the 2000/01 season and over the following two campaigns scored 41 goals, attracting the attention of top-flight clubs including Real Zaragoza, where he would also leave his mark in his early years.
One of the most iconic strikers not just in Spanish football but in the sport's history, he is Spain's all-time top scorer, a 2010 World Cup winner, and while his time in Gijón was brief, he remains a source of great pride for the supporters.

9. Abelardo
"El Pitu" Abelardo, a born-and-bred Gijonese, was the undisputed master of the Sporting back line for five seasons. Such was his quality that Barcelona paid his release clause to secure his services. He also earned international caps with Spain throughout his career before eventually hanging up his boots at Alavés.
His playing days at Sporting were over, but he returned as manager for several seasons, cementing his status as one of the most cherished and respected figures in the city.

8. Maceda
Antonio Maceda was an imposing centre-back who was central to Sporting's golden era, contributing to the runners-up finish of 1978/79. He also experienced the magic of European nights with the Asturian club and earned international caps with Spain. He played nine seasons at El Molinón, making over 200 appearances in the red and white.

7. Eloy Olaya
The Gijonese striker Eloy came through the academy at Mareo and made his first-team debut at just 15 in the 1978/79 season, in a Copa del Rey match against CD Turón where he scored his first goal. He later moved to Valencia in 1988 and a few years afterwards returned to the club of his life for two seasons in the top flight.

6. Juan Carlos Ablanedo
Known as "El Gatu", Ablanedo is a true one-club man — an absolute standard-bearer and a rock in goal. Born in Mieres, Asturias, he guarded the Sporting goal for a total of 17 seasons. His assurance and reflexes brought him three Zamora Trophies — a remarkable achievement for a goalkeeper at a club not regularly competing for the title.
He joined the Mareo academy at the age of ten, and his loyalty has placed him among the most respected icons in the club's history. He earned international caps with Spain and played at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups.

5. Manolo Mesa
The midfielder from Cádiz, Manolo Mesa, wore the Sporting shirt for 12 seasons and is the fifth-highest appearance-maker in the club's history. He was an active participant in the famous runners-up campaign and played in two consecutive Copa del Rey finals, in 1981 and 1982.

4. Enzo Ferrero
Enzo Ferrero, born in Argentina, was a left winger considered by many Sporting supporters to be the greatest foreign player in the club's history. He was hugely important during Sporting's golden era and on numerous occasions was carried off the El Molinón pitch on his teammates' shoulders after delivering memorable performances.

3. Cundi
Secundino Suárez, known as Cundi, is one of the great legends of the Sporting squad. The Asturian was a tireless full-back who spent virtually his entire career at Real Sporting de Gijón — specifically 15 seasons.
With over 300 official appearances to his name, his prodigious work rate and combative character have made him a genuine symbol of the Sporting faithful.

2. Joaquín Alonso
Born in Oviedo, Joaquín is the player with the most appearances in the club's history, having given 16 seasons to the club of his life — a complete career dedicated entirely to one side. Joaquín was a complete midfielder, the engine of the team, with the hard work, commitment and character that earned him the Sporting captaincy.
He is an emblem of the city, and like all the players on this list, earned international caps with Spain. He represented his country at the 1982 World Cup held on home soil, with El Molinón serving as one of the tournament venues.

1. Quini
Enrique Castro Quini, known as "El Brujo" — The Wizard — is the undisputed legend of the club. Every corner of Gijón knows it. Synonymous with goals, the striker wore the red and white for 15 seasons. The supporters were able to enjoy his football across three lustres, coinciding with Sporting's golden era. He is the club's all-time leading scorer in the top flight and claimed the Pichichi on seven occasions — a record surpassed only by Telmo Zarra and Leo Messi.
Quini also shone at Barcelona, where he was a teammate of Diego Armando Maradona, but the Asturian returned to Gijón a few years later, proof of his commitment and feeling for the colours. His goals and his connection with the terraces turned him into a genuine legend whose legacy is beyond question. His passing in 2018 left an enormous void — not just at El Molinón and in the city of Gijón, but in Spanish football as a whole.

One player who narrowly misses out on this top ten deserves a special mention: Luis Enrique. Despite spending only two seasons with the first team, he is one of the greatest products of the Mareo academy and has gone on to have a brilliant career as both player and manager.
That is our top 10 of the greatest players in Sporting's history — all of them share one defining quality: they left their mark at a historic club and their impact has made them icons across several generations.
