At press conferences, body language and tone carry almost as much weight as the words themselves. These spaces — often held in the heat of the moment immediately after a match — allow managers, players and directors to express themselves, giving us unrepeatable moments that have passed into football folklore. Here we look at some of the greatest meltdowns in football's press conference history.
Giovanni Trapattoni
The Italian manager, during his time at Bayern Munich, delivered one of the most celebrated press conferences in history in 1998. After a wretched run of results, a furious Giovanni Trapattoni declared: "A manager is not an idiot, he sees what is happening on the pitch. Two, three or four players were weak as an empty bottle." He launched fierce criticism at several of his players — most notably Strunz, Basler and Scholl. The press conference became a legendary piece of footage in Germany and remains one of the most watched videos in the country.

'Pichu' Cuéllar
The then-Sporting de Gijón goalkeeper exploded at a press conference after a journalist reported that Cuéllar had confronted Deportivo fans on the team's arrival at Riazor — something that hadn't actually happened. The Extremaduran goalkeeper could take no more and delivered his famous line: "Allow me the luxury of telling you that you are an idiot. It's not an insult — it's an adjective."

Pep Guardiola
At one of the most tension-charged moments between Barcelona and Real Madrid, ahead of a Champions League night, Pep decided to respond to José Mourinho at a press conference: "Off the pitch he's already won — I'll give him his own private Champions League. In this room he's the absolute f***ing boss, the smartest man in the world. I have no desire to compete with him for even a second."

Van Gaal
Arguably the most quoted line in press conference history came from Louis van Gaal. In December 1999, the Dutch Barcelona manager grew irritated when asked about Rivaldo, unleashing his legendary response: "You are very bad… always negative interpretation, never positive…"
José Mourinho
After falling in the 2011 Champions League semi-finals against Barcelona, Mourinho — then Real Madrid manager — sat down in the Bernabéu press room with thunder on his face and unleashed his famous string of "whys": "Why Övrebo? Why Bussacca? Why De Bleeckere?… Why? I don't know if they're very friendly with someone — I just don't understand it."

Rafa Benítez
"I asked for a sofa and they brought me a lamp." In the summer of 2003, Rafa Benítez was planning Valencia's new season and hoping for exciting new signings. The sporting directorate opted for Fabián Canobbio — something the manager was decidedly unhappy about, making his feelings known in gloriously direct fashion.
Miguel Rivera
While managing Real Valladolid B, Miguel Rivera was involved in one of the most heated press conference exchanges anyone can remember. After a match against Rápido de Bouzas, he confronted a journalist who had implied he was behaving dishonourably: "I say goodbye to everyone politely and then you call me a crook?! Christ almighty — for that?!" He accompanied his outburst with a bang on the table before walking out.

'Pitu' Abelardo
The Sporting de Gijón manager, after a defeat to Eibar, was asked by a journalist about a substitution he had made. The Asturian bit back: "You always go for the same angle — we know each other, you do enormous damage, always going for the f***ing negative — you and your f***ing paper…"
Gennaro Gattuso
Gattuso is world-famous for his fiery and singular character. During his spell as manager in Greece at OFI Crete, the Italian — tired of rumours about a possible departure — exploded. He raised his voice and defended his work and that of his players in a lengthy speech that produced gems including: "Players play with balls."
Javier Clemente
Athletic Club signed Javi Martínez in 2006 — something Clemente, then the Athletic manager, was less than thrilled about. He delivered his legendary line: "I don't know who Javi Martínez is — the club didn't sign what I asked for. It's like ordering bread and getting Nutella."
And there concludes our list of the 10 greatest press conference meltdowns. For one reason or another, all of them have passed into history and will never be forgotten.
