History of football in Salamanca: tradition, passion and legacy.

Salamanca has a football tradition that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, with the first steps taken by Irish students in 1905 with the Helmántica Foot-ball Club. The entity that became established was the Unión Deportiva Española, founded on February 9, 1923, which, after the arrival of the Republic, changed its name to Unión Deportiva Salamanca (U.D. Salamanca) in 1932. In 1936, the Salamanca club achieved its first promotion to the Segunda División (Second Division), but the Civil War postponed its debut until 1939/40.

Over the decades, the black and white club consolidated as Unión Deportiva Salamanca, S.A.D.. Matches were held at the old Campo de El Calvario, which was the club's home for several decades, until the inauguration of the Estadio Helmántico on April 8, 1970. Helmántico became the epicenter of the city's football life, witnessing its greatest moments of glory, such as the seven consecutive seasons in the First Division in the 1970s.
