History of football in Gipuzkoa: tradition, passion and legacy.
Gipuzkoa has a football tradition dating back to the early 20th century, with football brought from England by young students. The first documented club in San Sebastián was the San Sebastián Recreation Club around 1904. Internal disagreements led to the creation of the San Sebastián Foot-Ball Club, which competed in the 1909 Copa del Rey under the license of the Club Ciclista de San Sebastián, the entity with which it won its first historical title.
Over the decades, the club consolidated its position.
The new society was legally established on September 7, 1909, as the
Foot-Ball Society, and just a few months later, in 1910, King Alfonso XIII granted it the title of
Royal, marking the official birth of
Real Sociedad de Fútbol. Matches were held in emblematic venues such as the
old Atocha Field, which was the club's home for decades before the inauguration of the current
Anoeta Stadium.
The stadiums, uniforms, and colors of the local clubs have shaped the aesthetic of classic football in the province. Understanding this history, including the feat of being one of the founding clubs of La Liga in 1929 and the two consecutive league titles in the 1980s, allows us to understand the evolution of football shirt designs, sportswear, and the importance of historical kits as cultural elements. Each historical stage of football in Gipuzkoa and of teams like Real Sociedad inspires vintage football fashion and retro shirts, allowing us to connect with the legacy, passion, and spirit of classic football in the province.
