The 2008/09 season marked a milestone in the history of FC Cartagena, achieving their long-awaited promotion to the Second Division after years in the Second Division B. Under Fabri's initial management, the team shone in the first half of the season, but after his departure, Paco Jémez revitalized the squad with an attacking style. Cartagena finished top of Group II and, in the decisive playoff, defeated CD Alcoyano with a 2-1 at home and a 2-2 at El Collao.
