La década de 1990 supuso un período especialmente significativo en la historia del Sporting de Gijón, un tiempo marcado por momentos memorables, actuaciones destacadas y gestas que quedaron grabadas en la memoria del sportinguismo.
Uno de los capítulos más emblemáticos llegó en la temporada 93/94, cuando el equipo firmó una de sus mayores goleadas en LaLiga al vencer por 7-1 al Club Atlético Osasuna en El Molinón, con cuatro goles de Xavier Escaich, dos de Stanic y uno de Abelardo, en una noche histórica para los aficionados. Ese triunfo es aún recordado como uno de los más rotundos del club en la máxima categoría.
En la temporada 94/95, el club protagonizó otro hito importante al alcanzar las semifinales de la Copa del Rey, eliminando a equipos de primer nivel y dejando una imagen de orgullo y competitividad ante los grandes del fútbol español. Aunque las temporadas posteriores supusieron retos deportivos importantes, el sentimiento de unidad entre equipo y afición se consolidó.
1905 - Beginnings and Foundation
Real Sporting de Gijón was founded on July 1, 1905, making it one of the oldest clubs in Spain. Its early years were marked by the consolidation of football in Gijón and the Asturias region, laying the foundations for a rich football history.
1908 - El Molinón
El Molinón is the oldest football stadium in Spain, inaugurated in 1908. Throughout the 20th century, it witnessed Sporting's greatest successes and became a symbol of the city of Gijón. Its history is intertwined with that of the club, serving as a home for the fans and a stage for great sporting achievements.
1967 - 1980 - Quini, the "Wizard"
Enrique Castro "Quini" is undoubtedly the most emblematic figure in Sporting's history. A multiple-time top scorer in La Liga, his goalscoring prowess and charisma made him an idol for the Sporting Gijón fans.
1970XYZ80 XYZ80 The Golden Era
Sporting Gijón experienced its most successful period in the 1970s and 1980s. Under the management of Vicente Miera and with iconic players like Quini, Cundi, Ferrero, and Mesa, the team finished as league runners-up in the 1978XYZ79 season and reached two Copa del Rey finals (1981 and 1982). They also participated in several editions of the UEFA Cup, leaving an indelible mark on Spanish football.
