After a glorious decade in the 70s, the 80s began with the challenge of maintaining that high standard. Under the presidency of Alfonso Cabeza and the tenacity of García Traid on the bench, Atlético Madrid assembled a squad based on hard work, blending the experience of players like Dirceu, Arteche, and Rubén Cano with the energy of the youngsters from Atlético Madrileño (Ruiz, Rubio, Quique Ramos, etc.).
Their league campaign was almost triumphant, leading the table in 25 of the 34 matchdays. However, on the fateful afternoon of April 5, 1981, a controversial defeat against Zaragoza at the Vicente Calderón Stadium (1-2) began a negative streak that snatched the title from the club in the dying moments against Real Sociedad.
