England was chosen to host the eighth edition of the World Cup, held between July 11 and 30, 1966. It was marred by violent play and refereeing scandals.

Portugal was drawn into a rather difficult group. However, the Portuguese defeated Hungary and Bulgaria respectively. The last match of the group stage was against Brazil. Against all odds, the Portuguese won, making them a serious contender for the title.

In the quarterfinals, the Portuguese faced the tournament debutants, North Korea, who had surprisingly eliminated Italy in the group stage. The whole world, incredulous, watched as the Asians took the lead after 24 minutes. However, Eusebio emerged, scoring four goals in quick succession. The match ended 5-3.

In the semi-finals, the host nation, England, awaited. Bobby Charlton played perhaps the best match of his career, scoring both of his team's goals. Despite Eusébio's goal and Portugal's desperate efforts to equalize, they could not avoid defeat. In the third-place match against the USSR, a penalty goal by Eusébio and another by Torres at the end of the game gave Portugal, to date, its greatest achievement in the World Cup.

Although Portugal didn't win the 1966 World Cup in England, their performance was historic. Led by the legendary Eusébio, known as the "Black Panther," the Portuguese national team reached the semifinals in their first-ever World Cup appearance. Eusébio was the tournament's top scorer with 9 goals, and their semifinal match against England is remembered as a pinnacle moment for Portuguese football.

Before his brilliant performance at the 1966 World Cup, Eusébio had already cemented his status as a superstar by winning the Ballon d'Or in 1965. This individual recognition was a milestone for Portuguese football, demonstrating that a player from their league could compete with and surpass the best in Europe.

1962 The European Cup Final
Benfica, with Eusébio as a key figure, won their second consecutive European Cup in 1962 by defeating Di Stéfano and Puskás' Real Madrid 5-3. This match, with a young Eusébio scoring two goals, marked the end of Real Madrid's dominance in the competition and cemented Benfica's status as one of the great clubs of Europe at that time.

1989 and 1991 The Under-20 World Cup Victories
Although not the senior national team, Portugal's victories in the 1989 and 1991 Under-20 World Cups were crucial for the development of Portuguese football in the 20th century. These triumphs revealed a generation of talents such as Luís Figo, Rui Costa, and João Pinto, who would later form the core of the "Golden Generation" that took the senior national team to new heights in the following decades.
