Origins (1891-1913)
The club was founded by workers of the English railway in Montevideo. Originally called CURCC, it incorporated football in 1892 and won its first Uruguayan championships before separating from the company in 1913, adopting its definitive name and consolidating its sporting autonomy.

First titles and expansion (1918-1931)
After the name change, Peñarol won the championships of 1918 and 1920. They participated in the Uruguayan football schism of 1923-26, founding the Uruguayan Football Federation and winning parallel titles that strengthened their identity and relationship with the fans.

Professionalism and Local Dominance (1932-1960)
With the arrival of professionalism, they debuted in 1932 and quickly became leading contenders, winning consecutive championships in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. They built facilities like the Palacio Peñarol and consolidated their position as a dominant force in Uruguay.

International Glory (1960-1987)
The 1960s marked a turning point: their first Copa Libertadores titles (1960, 1961) and Intercontinental Cup (1961). In 1966, they repeated the feat, including the historic victory over River Plate and Real Madrid. In the 1970s and 80s, under figures like Fernando Morena, they added more local and international titles, including their third Copa Libertadores (1987).
