With a few months to go before the start of the 1990 World Cup where the Argentine team should defend the title, fashion designer and marketing expert Oscar Tubio contacted the AFA authorities to propose an innovative design for the Argentine shirt but why would the AFA listen to him? Oscar is a self-taught designer and marketing expert. Among his most outstanding designs is the clothing of Carlos Monzon, the shirt that Boca Juniors used in 1981 and the River shirt used in 1986. It had a very positive impact in terms of marketing and the way in which the rivals saw the players. . For this and much more, Oscar's minimum proposal had to be heard.
There was very little left for the team to wear the shirt designed by Oscar in an official match. The only thing missing was the approval of Julio Grondona, the president of the AFA.
Unfortunately it was not as expected. I did not agree with wearing this shirt for the World Cup and I also raised another question. He said that no one was going to be able to convince Bilardo to change his outfit after winning the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Calling Bilardo superstitious was not enough... Despite the fact that Maradona and the rest of the players were in love with this shirt, they could not get it to be used in an official match. Actually, Argentina debuted in the 1990 World Cup against Cameroon wearing the classic shirt with light blue sticks.
After Tubio revealed why his design was not used, Grondona contacted him to be able to use it in the Basketball team but he refused to let this happen.
After this rejection, hopes of being able to see Maradona play a game with this shirt were almost lost, but the sun was going to shine again.
Four years later a friendly was played at the Ferrocarril Oeste field. A charity match attended by more than 20,000 people. In this case, Oscar was in charge of the design of the shirts of the two teams and Maradona expressly asked him to use the design of the legendary shirt with the Sun on the chest.
But that would not be the only time we saw Maradona with that shirt. There are non-public matches in which El Pelusa uses the design that he had liked so much, as well as various characters such as Charly García in one of his concerts or David Beckham on his visit to Argentina.
