During the 1930s, the Austrian national team was the dominant team in Europe, led by Matthias Sindelar. In 1931 they were the first continental team to defeat Scotland.
The team's potential was reflected in their performance during the 1934 World Cup, where they achieved a creditable 4th place, being defeated by Italy in the semifinals and by Germany in 3rd-4th place.
